Hey pals! Long time no see! I know I've been totally MIA this summer but honestly, I had writer's block and just felt really uninspired and disillusioned with the blog. But, I've really kicked myself into gear, learnt some video editing skills (Watch this space for some tutorials and vlogs!) You can now expect new content to be posted every week!
While I was away, I have become obsessed with Coconut Oil! Or you could say I'm nuts for coconut oil (i hate myself for making that pun but it had to be done.) Pretty late to the coconut oil game but I use it for almost everything now!
Coconut oil has some amazing benefits for you both internally and externally.
Here are my top tips and uses for coconut oil!
1. Make Up Remover
As I've mentioned before, I have really sensitive skin. For years I just used makeup wipes and then I started using Micellar water after wipes to get rid of excess makeup but my skin was still getting red and sore. I first decided to try coconut oil after I wanted to buy the Clinique Take The Day Away cleansing balm but didn't fancy forking out thirty quid for a small enough tub. Coconut oil is honestly THE best product I've used for taking off my makeup. It removes it so quickly including waterproof eye makeup and lash glue (which tends to stick to my lids for ever). After rubbing it all in and making sure the products have been sufficiently removed, I use a warm washcloth or cotton wool dipped in warm water to remove the oil. I then continue with my nighttime skin care especially double cleansing. Try it and once you get over the oily texture, you won't go back!
2. Eye lash and brow serum
Oils such as castor oil have been known for improving hair growth for centuries. In order to increase the growth rate of my brows and lashes I melt a small amount of coconut oil and run a spoolie through it and then through my lashes and brows. I've noticed a big difference in how quickly my brows grow and the thickness of the hairs. It's a really quick and easy way to improve hair growth without breaking the bank.
3. Fake Tan Remover/ Body Scrub
You girls know the struggle of trying to get off a fake tan that's gone patchy. I got you covered gurl! Mix melted coconut oil with some sugar and scrub gently with exfoliating gloves. Voila! Tan be gone! The oil breaks down the product of the tan very quickly in a similar way to how it does with makeup. The sugar acts as a natural exfoliant helping to lift and remove dead skin cells and really work in those hard to get places like knees and elbows. A really quick and cheap alternative to other products with harsh chemicals. Bonus, the scrub also helps to stimulate circulation and can aid the the removal of cellulite!
4. Repairing Hair Mask and Detangler
I have naturally wavy and curly hair which tends to get quite matted if I forget to brush it daily (which happens pretty often if I'm being totally honest #LazyAF). I put the oil all over my mane and leave it for a while and then use my Tangle Teezer dupe (which I got in Dealz for 1.65 and is great). I then leave the oil in my hair for at least an hour, sometimes over night if I'm feeling it. Leaving the oil in as a mask really helps repair any damage done. I rinse it out and shampoo twice to make sure any residue is gone. It leaves my hair feeling soft and shiny and really healthy looking. I've also really noticed an improvement in how quickly it grows since I've started massaging it into my scalp. I use this mask about once a week during my weekly pamper sessions.
5. Shaving 'cream'
Are you looking for smooth skin post shaving? A lack or razor bumps? Look no further! The oil prevents the water from rinsing the cream off like it normally would with shaving foam. It also creates a really smooth surface for the razor to run over. The moisturising properties of the oil locks in moisture and leaves a silky smooth finish. You won't be able to stop touching your legs!
6. Nail and Cuticle Treatment
I perpetually have those gross hangnail things on at least one of my fingers. They hurt, they're pretty darn ugly. My nail technician Olga had previously told me that it's because the skin is too dry. So to combat this, I've been applying a little oil to my nail beds every so often. I've already noticed a difference in my nails they're growing stronger and faster and not as many unsightly hangnails! I'm going off to start my hand modelling career now ha!
As I've previously mentioned how moisturising coconut oil is. I use it literally everywhere. If I'm suffering with dry patches on my skin like elbows, heels etc. But my favourite is to use a tiny bit as a face moisturiser, avoiding my t-zone. I love to rub it in my under eye area at night as an eye cream to make it nice and hydrated and hopefully prevent fine lines and wrinkles. I've found my skin has become a lot smoother and I've noticed I'm having less hard dry areas (particularly my heels).
8. Rash and Burn Soother
I've recently started getting Laser Hair Removal (I'll be writing a blog about it soon). So far, I've had two sessions and afterwards, find the areas can be very itchy and dry. It was recommended to me to use Aloe Vera gel on the areas but I couldn't find it after my second session. After a quick google, I found that coconut oil can be used to help soothe bug bites, rashes and sunburn. It worked well in replenishing the moisture and soothing the areas post laser. However, once I found the aloe vera gel I'll continue to use that as it's what is recommended by the clinic.
9. Makeup Brush Cleaner
When I first started getting into makeup and beauty, I used extra virgin olive oil to break down the makeup left in the brushes. Now, I use coconut oil. I use some melted oil to really break down the dirt and excess makeup before washing them with a gentle soap or shampoo. It's really important however to make sure that all oily residue is removed from the brushes because it will cause your makeup to go on oily and break down before it's even applied. It also leaves your brushes nice and soft.
10. Bath Oil
I love baths, and I love using essential oils. I like to mix some epsom salts, lavender oil and coconut oil into a bath for the ultimate soak. I find this to be perfect for the ultimate pamper evening. The oils add to the relaxing atmosphere of the bath while the epsom salts are great for easing muscle aches.
I recommend using either pure or unrefined coconut oil. I got mine in Tesco for under 2 euro and it's lasted me months!
